12 week internship opportunities

Shalom Wildlife Zoo is a highly ranked zoo internship and has been featured on "Outdoor Wisconsin" PBS.

Shalom Zoo accepts eight honest, dedicated, enthusiastic and hard working interns each year to learn every aspect of zoo operations.

Working along side Zoo Staff, interns are involved with various aspects of animal care, including daily husbandry, feeding, exhibit maintenance and construction, behavioral enrichment, animal observations, formal and informal educational interactions with Zoo guests. Interns will also be involved in zoo admission, front desk and zoo management.

Internship candidates must have completed one year of college and be working towards a degree in biology, zoology, animal behavior, or any other related field.

Candidates must have excellent communication skills, observation skills, and have the ability to work alone and in a team environment. They must be able to follow oral and/or written instructions.

Zookeeping is a physically demanding profession, and interns are subjected to a variety of physical and environmental challenges. Interns may be required to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.  Tasks are occasionally strenuous and interns must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.  A tetanus vaccination is highly recommended.

It is required that an intern dedicates at least 12 weeks with a minimum of 3 days per week. They must also complete a project and/or paper that will benefit the zoo. Internships run during the summer in a consecutive three month period. The purpose of the intern position is to help the candidate gain knowledge, guidance and real life experiences.

The internship program is a volunteer/unpaid position.
Paid positions are available for interns looking for additional parttime employment.

Applications for the upcoming intern season are accepted January through March.
